PBIS@ 206
The non-punitive PBIS approach is used at PS/MS 206 to promote safety and good behavior among students. PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports. It is an evidence-based positive behavior support system designed to create and maintain a positive school climate. This framework emphasizes the prevention of school discipline problems by teaching students about behavior expectations and strategies.
Using the PBIS approach our students grow academically, socially, and emotionally. The three elements of PBIS are systems that support staff behavior, practices that support student behavior, and data that supports and guides the PBIS team decision-making.
The PBIS team facilitates the following initiatives:
Student of the Month
A student in each class is celebrated every month. Students who display our core values of Cooperation, Responsibility, Empowerment, and Determination participate in a celebration. Students receive a certificate and a reward for their hard work.
Check-in/Check-out (CICO)
Students assigned to a CICO intervention check in with a coach/mentor at the beginning of the day to set goals for the day. This adult can be a counselor or other staff member who is not an instructor for that student. Students use a point card that list all their periods. As the student progresses through the day, their classroom teachers check in about their behavior and assign points for meeting their daily goals. At the end of the day, the student checks out with the coach/mentor they began the day with, counting their points total for the day. The final component of this process involves the student taking their points card to a parent at home, and returning it signed at the next morning check-in.
Mediation
Mediation is a method of dispute resolution that encourages underlying issues to be addressed. In this process, neutral third parties assist the disputing parties in resolving their conflict.
Usually, there are underlying issues that are fueling the surface conflict. The mediator’s job is to create a safe space for both sides to be listened to so that they can realize the underlying issues.
The mediator then helps the students who disagreed come up with a resolution to resolve the conflict as well as heal the underlying issues. This is achieved through active participation and communication among all participants.
